Overcast skies and inclement weather did not prevent more than 500 folks from showing up to walk, run, ride and scooter during the annual Run for Mom on Sunday, May 12, 2024.
The 26th annual event raised more than $30,000 for breast cancer and breast health in the Yukon.
Participants this year were entertained by the Rubies, a trio led by of Claire Ness, while Katie Kasper was on hand to warm them up for the actual run/walk.
“We have some really dedicated supporters who come out year after year and in spite of the weather this year, we saw lots of new faces too,” said Val Pike, chair of the organizing committee.
Funds raised will once again support the participation of Paddlers Abreast in the Yukon River Quest, and the creation of an information package for women newly diagnosed with breast cancer.
“This package is something that was provided in past years and we feel it is time to update and modernize the info that physicians can give out to their patients,” said Pike.
In addition, Run for Mom is working with Yukon Hospitals to see how it can financially support the hospital’s efforts to reduce mammography wait times and support women’s breast health overall.
Outside of Whitehorse, Haines Junction, Mayo, and Atlin held their own events.
